WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (ZFJ) — The National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., has been extended through January 2029, when President Donald Trump’s term ends.
Trump initially declared a crime emergency, deployed 800 D.C. National Guardsmen to the nation’s capital, and temporarily seized control of the local police department on Aug. 11, 2025, claiming that doing so was necessary to control violent crime. Per the D.C. Guard, as of Monday, Sept. 7, there are currently 3,124 soldiers deployed from a host of states.

In section 2(d)(i) of his executive order, Additional Measures to Address the Crime Emergency in the District of Columbia, Trump requires that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to “immediately create and begin training, manning, hiring, and equipping a specialized unit” within the D.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (ZFJ) — President Donald Trump federalized the capital’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), deployed 800 D.C. National Guard soldiers, and ordered federal agents to patrol the streets in response to his claims that crime in the city is out of control on Monday, Aug. 11.
The District of Columbia is primarily under federal control and has limited local governance under the Home Rule Act. Section 740 of this law allows for the president to federalize the MPD under a state of emergency.
