WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 (ZFJ) — The National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C., has been extended through January 2029, when President Donald Trump’s term ends.
Trump initially declared a crime emergency, deployed 800 D.C. National Guardsmen to the nation’s capital, and temporarily seized control of the local police department on Aug. 11, 2025, claiming that doing so was necessary to control violent crime. Per the D.C. Guard, as of Monday, Sept. 7, there are currently 3,124 soldiers deployed from a host of states.
GREENBELT, Md., April 19 (ZFJ) — U.S. immigration authorities have erroneously deported Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia of Maryland, who was protected from removal by an immigration judge, to an El Salvador mega-prison.
Abrego Garcia’s case was brought before U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis at the Maryland federal court’s division in Greenbelt.
Xinis wrote in her memorandum opinion that Abrego Garcia came from Los Nogales, El Salvador, and illegally entered the U.
EDISON, N.J., Oct. 19 (ZFJ) — The Edison Board of Education voted 5-3 to abolish Policy 5756, which concerns transgender students, at their action meeting on Monday, Sept. 30. Since they didn’t properly follow the procedure to abolish a policy, it is still in effect.
The abolishment was not on the publicly posted agenda for the night and arose from a motion made from the floor.
This move follows the abolishment of Policy 5756 by many other school districts in N.
COLLEGE PARK, Md., Oct. 5 (ZFJ) — A federal judge ordered the University of Maryland, College Park, to allow UMD Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) to proceed with their demonstration on Monday, Oct. 7.
On Sept. 1, after significant outcry over UMD granting a permit to SJP to use McKeldin Mall for an “interfaith vigil,” the university announced that demonstrations would be prohibited on campus on Oct. 7, and that a “university-sponsored Day of Dialogue” would be held instead.
