EDISON, N.J., Jan. 11 (ZFJ) — A 17-year-old juvenile male has been arrested for the murder of a 17-year-old female in Edison, N.J., on Saturday, Jan. 10.
On Saturday, at 1:19 a.m., the Edison Police Department (EPD) received a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on Grove Avenue.
Responding officers found the female with a gunshot wound at the location, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 17-year-old male from Plainfield was at the scene and taken into custody. Per the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO), the male and female knew each other prior to the incident, so the shooting was not a random act of violence.
The male was charged with acts of juvenile delinquency for offenses which, if committed by an adult, would constitute aggravated manslaughter, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.
The male is being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center pending a preliminary hearing before a family court judge.
In an email to students on Monday, Jan. 12, the John P. Stevens High School (JPS) counseling department confirmed that the victim was currently attending the Edison Success Academy and formerly attended JPS.
The department said that counselors are available for students who need support.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Spielman of the Edison Police Department at (732) 248-7471 or Detective Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3316.
The charges against the juvenile male are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
