WASHINGTON, June 22 (ZFJ) — Washington Metro’s longer weekend hours, Red and Silver Line changes, and new system map took effect on Sunday, June 22.
Metrorail will open an hour earlier at 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and close an hour later at 2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Starting Monday, June 23, Red Line trains will run more frequently, arriving at least every four, instead of five, minutes “during the busiest portions of weekday rush hours.”
Half of Silver Line trains will run between Ashburn and Downtown Largo, while the other half will run between Ashburn and New Carrollton.
During peak rush hours on weekdays, extra Silver Line trains will run from Wiehle-Reston East to New Carrollton in the morning and from Stadium-Armory to Wiehle-Reston East in the afternoon.
Half of Yellow Line service will be extended to Greenbelt starting in December.
Metro has updated its system map to reflect the split on the Silver Line and upcoming split on the Yellow Line using hashed lines.
New “rail disc” logos have also been implemented, changing line names from a two-letter code to a single letter. For example, the Red Line will now be denoted with “R” instead of “RD.” Avenue based station names have additionally changed from “Ave.” to “Av.” to align with bus destination signs.
