EDISON, N.J., June 12 (ZFJ) — Sam Joshi and his team of town council candidates swept the Democratic primary election on Tuesday, June 10.

Nearing the end of his first term, incumbent Edison Mayor Sam Joshi secured 6,000-7,000 more votes than his challengers, Lav Patel and incumbent Councilman Richard Brescher.

“Thank you 🙏 everything we do is for the residents of Edison,” Joshi posted on social media after polls closed. “On to the general election in November. Note these are not the final results and our margin is growing.”

Lav Patel and Brescher’s campaigns also posted on Facebook to thank their supporters.

Joshi’s team for council also won nominations by a substantial margin, beating Lav Patel’s team by 3,000-4,000 votes. Joyce Ship-Freeman, a previous councilwoman who placed last for council in the 2023 election, placed last in Tuesday’s primary.

Biral Patel, the previous Edison Board of Education president, led with the most votes.

The Republicans’ sole mayoral candidate, Gloria Dittman, secured the nomination. The Republicans’ sole council candidates—Russell J. Azzarello, Kartik Shah, and Samiksha Sharmas—also secured their nominations.

The Edison mayor and council members serve four year terms.

Voter turnout for Edison ranged from 13.23% in District 28 to 37.81% in District 73. The mean turnout for the districts is 25.24%, and the standard deviation is 5.83%.

All results are unofficial until certified by the Middlesex County Board of Canvassers on or before June 20, 2025.
